IKEA recently reissued a recall announcement for its dressers after an eighth child died due to a tip-over accident. Thus far, 186 tip-over incidents involving IKEA’s Malm dressers have been reported; 91 of those included injuries to children. (Recalls have been issued for other IKEA brand dressers as well.)
When the recall was first issued in June 2017, 29 million dressers were covered by the recall; in the first six months, only 882,500 dressers were returned or “repaired.” IKEA has launched a “Secure It!” program to raise awareness of the recalls and to “reduce the risk of home accidents” by providing wall-anchoring kits. IKEA is offering a refund for the dressers or a free wall-anchoring kit.
According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, one child dies every two weeks from tipping furniture (including TVs). IKEA is not the only company to have had dressers recalled; therefore, in the interests of protecting your children consider installing wall-anchoring kits or brackets for all your dressers. Installing the kit is simple. This video from eHow provides step-by-step instructions for installing a wall-anchoring kit or brackets to secure your furniture.
